Our Vision

Welcome to Thornleigh Educate Together National School!

Cherishing Each Child

I would like to warmly welcome you to Thornleigh Educate Together National School’s website.  You will clearly see from this website the sense of ‘child-centeredness’ and ‘community’ which is core to the effective and efficient running of our school.
On entering through our school door you will immediately get the sense of a happy, hard working school.  This has come about as a result of staff, parents and the Board of Management working together collaboratively and democratically.  Since opening our doors in September of 2008 we have grown from a 2 teacher school to a 14 teacher school in less than 3 years.

Here we thoroughly embrace Howard Gardner’s Theory of multiple intelligences – in which he rightly espouses that children learn in many different ways.  At Thornleigh we use different teaching methodologies to ensure that your child will always receive the best classroom based teaching through the adoption of this theory.  Through the use of this theory each teacher will bring out your child’s strongest academic and holistic potential.  We value the uniqueness of each individual child.

Each child is taught the Revised Curriculum as laid down by the Department of Education and Skills.  They are taught the following subjects throughout their eight years here with us at Thornleigh Educate Together, English, Gaeilge, Mathematics, SESE(history, geography, science), Music, Drama, Physical Education, SPHE, Art and The Learn Together Programme which encompasses the four strands of – Ethics and the Environment, Moral and Spirituality, Belief Systems and Equality and Justice.
During the school year children also benefit from classes taught by trained coaches from our local sports club.  They are also exposed to classes from an expert Drama Teacher.

I would like to welcome all parents, Guardians and the community of Thornleigh to our fourth year of the school.  I would especially like to welcome all new pupils, parents and staff.

Our new staff is as follows:
Eoghan Beardmore – EAL
Cian Gleeson – HSCL
David Lowe – SNA
Frank Ellis – SNA.

This year our focus for teaching and learning will be placed on literacy and numeracy.  These two core areas are the basis for all of your child’s education and without a good foundation in these areas problems could arise.

We hope to run a number of events again this year involving parents and the stakeholders in your child’s education.  These events will include some or all of the following:
Car boot sales
Mini Fun Family Fun Days
Multicultural food fare
Seachtaine na Gaeilge.

This list is not exhaustive and if you would like to arrange anything for the school please contact your child’s teacher or the school office.
We will be running the following classes for parents and the dates will be notified to you in due course:
Flower arranging
Gardening
Esol
Gaeilge
These classes are run on a first come first served basis.

In class (starting after midterm) we will run shared reading, maths for fun, science for fun and gardening each Friday.

Cian will be replacing Lorraine as HSCL and he will be in the yard in the mornings and at home to meet with parents.

A number of after school classes will be run for the children which will include – choir, GAA, homework clubs and Art.  If any parents are interested in running an after school club please let me know.

If any parents/guardians are interested in joining the Parents Association please contact us on 01 8074969 or give your name to the class teacher.  It is an excellent way of supporting your child in his/her education.  Meetings are held once or twice per term at a time which suits the parents association.

Please contact us at 018074969 086 7272852 or by email at thornleighet@yahoo.co.uk if you would like to help out in any way or offer your skills to the school and or class teachers.

We are looking forward to another year of teaching and learning, activities and community days.

Looking forward to working with you all,
Miss Paula Príomhoide and all staff at Thornleigh Educate Together

Hello and welcome to the web site of Thornleigh Educate Together.  We are an all inclusive school and at our school ‘no child is an outsider, and our Ethos is based on the four Principles of Educate Together  – Democratically run, Child centered in our approach to teaching and learning, multi- denominational and co-educational.  When you visit our school these pillars will become clear to you and just inside our front entrance you will see our Charter, which has been drawn up by Principal, staff and parents alike.  It espouses the kind of school we are and the goals we strive for each day.

It is believed that if a child has a good foundation in English and Mathematics it will feed across all other curriculum areas and therefore the child will achieve their best possible results.  We have looked into ways of ensuring this happens and as result we have embraced the First Steps Reading and Writing programmes in literacy and Ready Set Maths in numeracy.

In January 2010 we began with first Steps Writing in the form of Recounts, Free Writing and will continue with narrative.  The children have blossomed under this programme and the guidance of their excellent teachers.  On displays around the school and in the children’s free writing copies evidence of this is very clear.  Speak to your class teacher if you would like to know more or see some samples of the work.

In relation to literacy and maths Ready Set Maths is based on the children obtaining an excellent grasp of number at an early stage in their development.  Number is the basis for all maths strands and if the children are very familiar with, and have a good understanding of, number and the other areas of maths will be very accessible to them and easier to understand and grasp.

Another scheme we have embraced in conjunction with the School Completion Programme is Free Fruit on Friday.  Each child in the school receives free fruit on Friday and the absolutely love it.  The Junior Infant teachers cut the fruit up for the children and they receive it for little break.  The children have an opportunity during the week to choose the type of fruit they like so therefore there is no wastage and the children are adhering to our Healthy Eating Policy.  This has proven to be a huge success and the children look forward to their fruit after Assembly with Miss Paula each Friday morning.

If you would like to come in and see our hard working, beautifully displayed school and enquire further as to ‘school life’ - we welcome you.

All What is Educate Together?

Educate Together is the umbrella organisation recognised as a Patron by the Department of Education and Science. It aims to meet the need within Irish society for schools that recognise the increasing diversity in Ireland.

All Educate Together schools are founded on four key principles:
Multi-denominational
Co-educational
Child-centred
Democratically run.

Ethos: The Learn Together Programme
is taught for 30 minutes per day and it is very much integrated with the Social, Personal and Health Education curriculum. This programme is taught by teachers to embed the ethos of our school. Our ethos reflects the four guiding principles of all multi-denominational schools as defined in the Educate Together Charter.

The four curriculum strands for the Learn Together curriculum are:
The Moral and Spiritual Strand
The Equality and Justice Strand
The Belief Systems Strand
The Ethics and Environment Strand

The aim of these strands is to nurture and develop in the children a caring and responsible approach to society.

We make a clear distinction between Religious Education and Religious Instruction. In our programme, the children learn about different religions, belief systems and traditions that are part of human development. Religious Instruction, which focuses children on one single religion and fosters a commitment to that religion, is the responsibility of the child’s parents/guardians and is taught by qualified instructors. Religious Instruction classes are organised by parents and held outside school hours. They do not form part of the school programme.
