World Down Syndrome Day 2023

Monday 21/3/23 was World Down Syndrome Day.  To celebrate the day in Thornleigh ETNS many of the children and staff wore odd (mismatched) socks and learned about inclusion and diversity.  We also really enjoyed singing the wonderful Down Syndrome Centre song 'Better Place' and learning some new Lámh actions.  There is a short video clip of Ms. Sharon's 3rd class singing below and here is a link to the Down Syndrome Centre song  https://youtu.be/Bb3dzixWFo0

The Down Syndrome Ireland theme for this year is “With Us Not For Us” and is focused on a human rights-based approach to disability – the right to be treated fairly, have the same opportunities as everyone else, and the freedom for people to make their own choices.

Lá Gaeilge 2023

On March 15th we celebrated Seachtain Na Gaeilge and St. Patrick's Day by having a Lá Glas in Thornleigh. Staff and students wore green to school and made an extra big effort to speak Irish during the day. The Junior end of the school had a "Paráid Mór" around the school, cheered on by parents and the senior end of the school. They got to show off some lovely art they made while they were at it!
The senior end of the school decorated their classroom windows for "Comórtas na bhFuinneoga", covering them in wonderful art and phrases in Irish for all of Applewood to admire! Other activities that took place included Trath na gCeist, Pop Up Gaeltacht for staff and parents and some wonderful Irish dancing lessons in infants. Tá an Gaeilge lán-bheo i Thornleigh (Irish is alive and well in Thornleigh)!
Well done to all staff and students involved!

School Choir Winter Performance

Our School Choir performed for all children and Parents in the school on Friday December 16. Well done to all of the children involved and a special thanks to Ms. Maurette, Ms. Katie and Múinteoir John for all your hard work with the children. Everyone was blown away by the talent on show.

Hot Chocolate Day

There was great excitement in the school today as the children had a very special visit from Mrs. Claus and each child in the school got a cup of hot chocolate. The perfect treat to keep us warm during the cold spell of weather. Thank you to all the teachers for helping put with a special mention to Ms. Paula and Ms. Antionette for coordinating the day.

More Suspicious Elf Activity!!

We had more unusual Elf Activity today, the Elves decided to play a nice trick on the pupils of Thornleigh. The were seen sneaking around the school and they hid a box of chocolates in all the classes so the children could enjoy a treat while watching the Helix Panto.

Thank you Elves

Attention all Parents and Children

There have been some very strange sightings in Thornleigh recently. Eamonn our caretaker has found some very unusual footage on our CCTV, he saw some very naughty elves running around the school. Can you please watch the video and keep an eye out for any more naughty behavior!

Thanks for all your help.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of Thornleigh,

I hope that you are all keeping safe and your families too.

One of our teachers – Ms Karen McQuaid, 5th class – has kindly drawn up a list of places which you can visit with your children in Swords, Donabate, Skerries, Rush and the greater Dublin area.  Some of these places are free and some are paid entrance.  They are a mixture of indoor/outdoor, cultural and fun experiences – Enjoy and thank you to Karen.

Hot Lunches

Dear parents and Guardians of Thornleigh

I hope that you are all keeping well and that your children are happy to be back in school,
This year we are one of the lucky schools to be able to offer your child ‘free’ hot lunches on a daily basis.  This is a great initiative and we are delighted to be offering it to the children of Thornleigh.  You will receive a form today to fill out with regard to same and if must be returned before Thursday the 23rd of September.  If we do not get the form back we will not be able to supply lunch.  Please let your class teacher know if your child has any food allergies and we will do our best to avoid these foods for your child.

We distributed a sample of these lunches before we finished up in the Summer and the children all loved them.

Have a good week.

Kind Regards
Ms Paula Carolan
