Nurture

A little Info on our Nurture
Program

Our Nurture Room opened in September 2021. The aim if the nurture program is to create a world where no child fails through lack of nurture and educational opportunity. Nurture groups are founded on evidence-based practices and offer a short-term, inclusive, focused intervention that works in the long term. Nurture groups are classes of between six and 12 children or young people in early years, primary or secondary settings supported by the whole staff group and parents. Each group is run by two members of staff. Children attend nurture groups but remain an active part of their main class group, spend appropriate times within the nurture group according to their need and typically return full time to their own class within two to four terms. We follow and adhere to the 6 principles of nurture which are:
  • children's learning is understood developmentally;
  • the classroom offers a safe base;
  • nurture is important in the development of wellbeing;
  • language is understood as a vital means of communication;
  • all behaviour is communication;
  • and transitions are significant in the lives of children.

We have undertaken whole-school nurture training which aims to develop and support the nurture principles across the whole school community.

The Principles of a Nurturing Approach for Learning: Nurture INTERNATIONAL are:
  • Learning and achievement is enhanced through meeting social, emotional and cognitive needs.
  • Feeling emotionally safe is essential for mental health, learning and achievement.
  • How we communicate impacts on Mental Health, learning and achievement.
  • Celebration of Diversity enriches the community and enhances learning.
  • Nurturing cultures promote reflective practices.
  • Self-Identity and self-esteem are key to mental health and well-being.
