We had a visit from a Scientist who showed us lots of different experiments and even let some of the boys and girls from 4th Class help her make elephants toothpaste!! Vicious Viking pencil portraits!

Picture
We integrated history and art in term 3 by creating amazing portraits of "Vicious Vikings". We learned all about vikings in history, and then had a go at drawing them using a technique called "facial mapping". Facial mapping helps us put the features of the face, such as the eyes, mouth and nose, in the correct place. We also learned all about the different shades and textures that can be created using just one ordinary HB pencil!. I think you'll agree when you look at our art, that you don't need loads of fancy markers to make a picture look interesting!

3D Structures

Picture
In Miss Maurette's class, we explored the properties of 3D structures through making our own with matchsticks, lollipop sticks and Plasticine. We all loved the fact that we were building things as part of a Maths lesson. It's not all about numbers in copies you know!

easter 1916 Rising studies in history

Picture
As this year is the 100th anniversary of the Easter 1916 Rising, we did a whole term of history lessons on this topic. We learned tons of interesting facts about the leaders of the rebellion and the proclamation they wrote. We then had a go at writing our own proclamation, in which we included our hopes and wishes for the Ireland of the future.
Picture
Miss Maurette's Class learned all about the history of the Irish tricolour, to make a lovely display as part of their 1916 Rising History Studies. Never before have flag facts been so fascinating!

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016

Tura Arutura Visit
Picture
We had so much fun dancing with superstar sean nós dancer Tura Aratura, who travelled all the way from Belfast to visit us as part of our Seachtain Na Gaeilge celebrations. Fluent Irish speaker Tura is a dancer from Zimbabwe. He moved to Belfast in 1993 when he was 19 years old. He teaches dance and has become a familiar face in Irish language circles. He is proof that you don't have to be from Ireland to speak Irish well and also that it never too late to learn the "cúpla focail"! We had so much fun speaking Irish and dancing with him.
Irish Breakfast
Picture
Thanks to David Donegan HSCL and the Parents' Committee, we were all able to enjoy a free yummy Irish breakfast as part of our Irish Flag Raising Celebration Day. For some of us, it was our first time ever having an Irish breakfast, so it helped us learn about Irish culture in a really delicious way!
Dancing at the Flag Raising Ceremony
Picture
With the help of the School Céilí Club, Miss Teresa and Múinteoir Paddy, the whole school were able to learn a lovely group dance, which we did outside together as part of the Flag Raising Ceremony.

Mother's day creativity in miss maurette's class

Picture
Picture
In Miss Maurette's class, we put a lot of time, effort and love into making gifts for our Mums for Mother's Day. We made "pinch pots" out of clay and then painted them and varnished them as gifts for our Mums. We also had fun writing news reports on how wonderful our Mums are. We hope all our Mums had a great Mother's Day and that you liked the things we made for you!
Road Safety Authority Visit to 3rd Class- March 2016
Picture

Both Miss Aoife and Miss Maurette's class were very lucky to get a visit from the Road Safety Authority, who told us all about staying safe as pedestrians, cyclists and car passengers. We did a quiz and had great fun!
November 2015 in Miss Maurette's Class
We made calaveras-style masks in Art to tie in with our Learn Together lessons about the Mexican festival, Day of the Dead. This festival is called "El Dia de Los Muertos" in Mexico, and is celebrated by wearing colourful skeleton masks and having get-togethers by the graves of loved ones.
Picture
We also learned about Diwali. Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (or deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. It was so nice to learn about this festival from our classmate, Simarpreet, who is originally from India.
At Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their homes. A rangoli is a colourful design made on the floor near the entrance to a house to welcome guests. We made our own chalk rangoli to celebrate the festival.

SCIENCE WEEK 2015
We were very lucky to have lots of nice activities organised for us by the Science team in Thornleigh. These included a really interesting workshop on energy and climate change, a visit from a mobile planetarium and a birdwatching walk led by our good friend, Mouse from OWLS. There are definitely more than a few budding scientists in our class after this week of fun activities. Check out our photos in the slideshow below!
