STEAM Week - Ms. Karen's Class.
Múinteoir Ryan's Class
The month of November was very enjoyable for 5th class.
The children learnt all about the Hindu festival of Diwali as part of the learn together curriculum. As part of this the class made their own unique Diwali candle holders out of clay before painted them in their own style.
The children were also learning about the ancient Aztec empire, exploring their unique culture and traditions. The class designed their very own sunstones which were important religious artworks among this ancient society.
To mark the start of winter we looked at some traditional winter poems, focusing on the common themes and tones of these poem. The children then wrote their own winter poems and design posters and cards to put them on to make a beautiful display outside the classroom.
We look forward to another busy month in December before finishing up for the New Year.

We have had a bright November in 5th class, despite the darker mornings and evenings. We have learned about the celebration of Diwali and we made brightly decorated Diwali lamps. We have experimented with the effect of shining a light through water and we have learned about the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque materials. We have looked at a variety of light sources also and determined/justified the odd ones out.
During November, the children have enjoyed learning about the Easter Rising of 1916. We have read about it, talked about it, drew pictures of it and even discussed songs that focus on 1916.
As you will know, the children compiled projects on various counties of Ireland for homework. We all really enjoyed hearing about what they learned during their research.
We received a delivery of books from the mobile library – the children are working their way through these books and we will receive another delivery shortly. We are continuing to read ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo in small groups also and the children regularly listen to ‘The Wildflower Girl’ by Marita Conlon-McKenna.
For maths, we have been busy learning about fractions, long division and angles.
We have continued with the Marathon Kids programme – at the conclusion of November, the children have begun to do 18 laps of the basketball court on a daily basis. We will complete the final mile soon and the children will receive a Marathon Kids medal and t-shirt for their efforts.
We received penpal letters from our partner 5th class in county Mayo. This was very exciting and we wrote back quickly.
That’s all for now!

October
Múinteoir Ryan's Class
This month in 5th class the children were very busy.
The children began their Marathon kids programme. Over the course of 8 weeks the children will run laps everyday while learning about the physical and mental health benefits linked with exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Each week the children will run more and more laps until they have reached a full marathon (over 42km!) which is an exceptional achievement at any age.
In SESE the children learnt all about the age of exploration and the development transportation methods which allowed people to travel further than ever before. Each child was given a specific explorer to research and complete a project on, they then had to present this to the whole class. The children made brilliants posters, reports and powerpoints on their explorers and they presented their work really well to the rest of the class.
Múinteoir Karen's Class - October
Hi Everyone
5th class have been working very hard throughout the month of October.
For maths, everyone has been perfecting their long multiplication skills, as well as re-visiting and learning more about 2D shapes. We have created a variety of shapes/outlines with tangram puzzles also (tangrams are a traditional Chinese puzzle).
We have created a class motto ‘as Gaeilge’. The motto is ‘Ar scáth a cheile a mhairimid’, which translates as ‘we live in one another’s shadows’, meaning that we must work together co-operatively and help one another out. Also during Gaeilge lessons, we worked on Halloween poetry – ‘An Chailleach Gránna’ (‘The Witch’) and ‘An Púca’ (‘The Ghost’). As part of Art, the children painted Halloween masks and showed great creativity.
For homework, the children created fantastic projects about European countries – thank you for helping them with this. It was very interesting to find out about a variety of countries, especially as many of the children have family living in such diverse places.
We have linked up with a school in Co. Mayo in the West of Ireland and the children are communicating with 5th class pupils there through letter-writing. They are very excited about this.
The garden has been important for 5th class during the month of October. Everyone has worked very hard by weeding and clearing out the garden in order to make way for planting. We have planted cabbage, broccoli, onions, shallots and garlic. Everyone is looking forward to digging up and eating our vegetables in the Spring.
Throughout October, we continued on with the Marathon Kids programme – the children have been running laps on a daily basis, with the number of laps increasing each week.
We are looking forward to a busy, productive and fun month of November.

September
We have had a brilliant month in 5th class this September. It was fantastic to see all the children returning to school happy, healthy and ready to learn. The children were all made aware of the new rules and safety precautions that have been put in place and they have adapted really well to the new way of school life.
We spent this month revising over topics from fourth class, taking our time to make sure everyone was ready before moving on, following the new school motto ‘slow down, to catch up’ the children worked at their own pace. In SPHE we spent a lot of time addressing the feelings and emotions the children and their families went through over this difficult time and ways we can cope with them, focusing on to find the positive, ‘rainbow moments’, each day has to offer. In SESE children learnt all about Japan this month, looking at the country’s remarkable geography and interesting history. We also learnt about the human skeleton, naming all the different bones and learning about their important functions in our day to day lives. In art the children learnt about Pablo Picasso and made their own Picasso Portraits.
