Literacy Multicultural Week 2024
The school has been buzzing this week with story telling, story writing and sharing our various cultures! All the classes celebrated 35 years since the original publication of David Mc Kee’s ‘Elmer’, as well as looking at traditional tales from around the globe! We introduced our first swap shop in the library, organised wonderfully by our very capable and efficient librarians! Big thank you to the grown ups who visited our school to read stories in their native languages and to all the staff who embraced the fun of Literacy Multicultural Week at Thornleigh! Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for our whole school Elmer Mural featuring our lovely class photos! Check out some of the fabulous activities we engaged in below!!
Seachtain na Gaeilge 2024
There was a great buzz all around the school for our 'lá glas' during Seahtain na Gaeilge. We celebrated Irish culture and language through many different mediums such as music, dance and using our cupla focail. Bhí lá iontach ag gach duine. Go raibh míle maith agaibh do gach duine!

Hello and Farewell
Dear Parents
The role of HSCL (Home School Liaison Officer - Paddy) runs for a term of 5 years in DEIS Band 1 Primary schools. Paddy has more than lived into and embraced this role over the past 5 years. He has been so compassionate, supportive, empathetic and respectful to all of our parents - meeting them where they are.
He organised some wonderful events, coffee mornings, parent classes and classes, parent evenings to name but a few. We had a very professional and respectful relationship working closely together for the past five years. It has been great to witness Paddy's growth both as an individual and a professional.
While Paddy is moving on from the role of HSCL he will not be moving on from Thornleigh but rather going back to his original role of classroom teacher.
Go raibh maith agat a Phadraig.
We held interviews a few weeks ago for the role of the new HSCL teacher in Thornleigh. There was great interest from the staff in this role - a testament to the success of the role of HSCL both within Thornleigh and the Irish Education System.
The successful candidate was Cathal and he will be meeting with you all over the course of the next 5 years and particularly the first half of the term 2022/2023. Cathal has worked in DEIS schools for over 10 years now and has a lot of experience in area of being supportive to parents. We wish him well in his new role - and will be calling on you to assist him with the Soup Day mid October 2022!!
We wish Cathal every success in his new role.
See you all in September

Children First Awareness Week
Children First Awareness Week is taking place from 1st to 7th November 2021. Children First promotes the protection of children from abuse and neglect, by setting out what individuals and organisations need to do to keep children safe, and how to deal with concerns about a child’s safety or welfare. Society has a duty of care towards children, and everyone should be alert to the possibility that children they are in contact with may be abused or at risk of abuse or neglect. If you are concerned about a child or young person, you should contact Tusla social work department. Organisations classed as providers of relevant services under the Children First Act 2015 are required to complete a risk assessment and must have a Child Safeguarding Statement in place. More information on keeping children safe in our communities is available at gov.ie/childrenfirst

Library Re-Launch 2021
Our New Library at Thornleigh!
Over the past few weeks our library in Thornleigh has been transformed! We now have a wonderful new space to browse and borrow books, study and access computers! With the help of our school librarians Olivia, Sabel and Kelsey, all the books were organised. Kalina, Melissa and Danya decorated the entrance door with The Library Poem by Julia Donaldson. The very talented duo of Mr John and Ms Roisin added another fantastic ‘outer space’ mural to the wall! Ms Antoinette sourced amazing books for our new dual language section. Eamonn our caretaker helped us to rearrange book shelves and our Special Education team made a beautiful balloon arch for launch day! We officially opened our new library during Literacy and Nature Week, the 17th - 21st May 2021!
A massive THANK YOU to all who helped make it happen.
Happy Reading Thornleigh Educate Together National School!

Dear Parents & Guardians,
29th April 2021
We are delighted to announce that we will be piloting our new Nurture School Programme with Third and Sixth Classes from September 2021. Our staff members have been trained in this new programme which is designed to promote our students’ self-esteem, independence and social and emotional wellbeing.
We will be using a number of techniques that will involve whole class lessons and some small group work to help the students develop lifelong skills that will help them to become more self-confident, to work independently and to form respectful, lasting relationships.
We are busy preparing our ‘Nurture Room’ in which small group work will take place, by using games, discussion circles, practical activities like gardening, cooking and arts and crafts.
We will be in touch with parents over the next few weeks with more information as we select our groups for the next school year.
Warmest Regards
The Nurture Team

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends of Thornleigh
26th April 2021.
I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful day – socially distanced.
School is running very well at the moment and all the children are very happy doing their lessons outdoors. We are so lucky here at Thornleigh to have such wonderful space to be able to teach outdoors.
The week of the 17th of May will see the staff and children of Thornleigh enjoying a Literacy/Nature week. During that week the children will learn about the fabulous outdoors while at the same time working hard on all aspects of their Literacy – writing, oral language and reading skills. Watch this space for lots of pictures of the wonderful lessons to come. We will have two guest facilitators on the day, both of whom are experts on the outdoors. They are Mouse aka Andy of OWLS fame and Ger Clarke another fantastic expert in his field who has an enviable wealth of knowledge about all things outdoors.
Below you can read a Thank You letter from the Chief Inspector – Harold Hislop – thanking us for our participation in the Remote Teaching and Learning Evaluation.
Just a reminder school will be closed next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Kind Regards

Good morning to all parents and guardians of Thornleigh
I hope you enjoyed the midterm and managed to have a well-earned rest from home schooling. It is lovely to see the sun shine on this beautiful Monday morning.
Thank you again for all the effort you have put in, in designing, the most creative pancakes I have ever the seen. The website looks all the better for it and I am sure it brought a smile to a lot of faces – I know they brought a smile to my face.
With regard to the re-opening of Primary schools – I have not as yet, at time of writing this notice, received any official word from the Department of Education and Skills, as to when this will be happening. Hopefully it will be in the near future and as soon as I have word I will let you all know.
This week’s theme is ‘fun’ so go ahead and have some fun today and every day this week.
Yours sincerely
Paula Juliet Carolan – Príomhoide.

Dear Parents, Guardians and friends of Thornleigh,
We have almost reached midterm and with that comes a well-earned break for both yourselves (home-schooling and working!) and the staff and children of Thornleigh.
The midterm and Wellness Wednesday 2021 will cover 16th, 17th and 18th of February with a return to online classes on the 22nd of February. As it is Wellbeing day on Wednesday teachers and staff will not be online or contactable and therefore there is “no” requirement on your children to upload any work.
However, a timetable/list/menu of suggested activities will be posted by your child’s class teacher early next week, for you, your child and family to carry out.
We hope that you all enjoy and partake in this well-earned day for all.
Yours sincerely

Video Message from Ms. Paula - 10th February, 2021
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope you are keeping safe and well.
Children in Crossfire are currently working to install sanitation and hand washing facilities in 700 schools in Tanzania. By taking part in their Walk for Water fundraising initiative, in which we are asking our children to walk one mile each school day in March, Thornleigh Educate Together National School will be helping to achieve that goal while also getting vital regular exercise and helping our pupils maintain their wellbeing while supporting international programmes.
There was great support shown for this fundraising initiative via the poll that was sent out. We propose to complete the 5 miles per week by the following: 1 mile three times a week for homework and 1 mile twice per week in school.
All participants will receive a new 'Hope' bracelet, which are made by people in Tanzania's Morogoro region. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be given to their Childhood Development Organisation.
Thank you for your support.

Dear Parents
I hope and trust this message finds you all well and safe during these strange times.
As you have probably already heard the schools will now be closed until the 1st of February 2021. There we will go live online from Thursday 14th of January at 9am rather than 8.20 start. Junior and Senior infants will be online from 9am – 1.30 with a break for 15mins at 11 and 25mins at 12.30.
First to 6th class will be online from 9am – 2.30 from Thursday 14th, with breaks at 11 for 15mins and 12.30 for 25mins.
We will send an email to all parents with work for Monday – Wednesday. The reason we are going live on Thursday is that we are changing from Edmodo to Google Classrooms. After some research it would appear the Google Classroom facilitates a much better online learning experience for your children and we want to give them the best possible experience.
The following are the dates and times for book collections. Those of you who have more than one child in the school will be given ALL BOOKS FOR ALL OF YOUR CHILDREN WITH THE YOUNGEST CHILD’S CLASS TO FACILITATE YOU ONLY HAVIN TO COME ONCE. For example, if you have a child in 6th class and Junior infants the books will be given to the Junior Infant class.
Only One person is permitted to collect books, where possible, to avoid gathering of people and socialising as the virus is more transmissible than ever and we have to keep all safe. Please do not send children to collect books.
Monday 11th
Junior and Senior Infants at the same gate as arrivals from 11 – 12
1st and 2nd 12.30 – 01.30 same gate as arrivals
Tuesday 12th

Again please do not congregate, but rather collect books and head home. If your books are not collected, we will take them back in and you can contact Paddy or myself to make alternative arrangements.
Thank you for your cooperation and we will continue to update you as we go along. Please do not hesitate to contact us by email or on the school phone at 0867510078 or Paddy at 0851115941.
Keep well keep safe and know that we will continue to educate the children of Thornleigh to the highest possible standard.

STARCAMP - FREE FOR EVERY CHILD IN IRELAND FOR LOCKDOWN
STARCAMP is kick starting 2021 with FIREWORKS! Having just announced it on social media - thousands from all over Ireland have already signed up.
As a gesture of goodwill and in the spirit of encouraging children to have fun and stay healthy, mentally and physically over this new and hopefully final lockdown, STARCAMP have decided to roll out their incredibly positive, fantastically fun, unique Online Camp for every single child in Ireland for FREE. "Simply to give back to the world in a time of need", Aideen O' Grady, STARCAMP's owner has stated.
The intention was to sell the experience to children for the mid term in February, but the STARCAMP team feels that every child in Ireland deserves a positive, happy, feel good kick start to a brand new year... And every parent deserves to get something for FREE after the year they’ve had! (They’ve also earned some quiet time!).
Having cost thousands to create, produce and record, Aideen and her team spent weeks writing, making, editing these 5 x 90 minute programs for children.
Contributors include Keith Barry (showing us magic tricks) and Don Conroy (giving drawing lessons) along with lots of the usual STARCAMP team teaching everything from science experiments, baking, magic, jokes and games to music, dance and drama!
The Online Camp (which can be watched over 5 days or all at once) can be availed of by signing up to it on their website NOW at www.starcamp.ie Please go to the page “Virtual Camp - Jan 21” at the top of the page, fill in your details and a link will then be emailed back to you which you can log into from Monday morning!
We hope that every child will get to enjoy what has been created for the sole purpose of making children smile and feel good!
Wishing you all a content, love filled and happy 2021 where happy memories are made and laughs galore are experienced!

Letter from Ms. Paula 31st December 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians and friends of Thornleigh,
Hello to all of you and to all of our students. Did you have a nice Christmas? I hope that all of you and your families are well and safe.
As you may have heard on the news yesterday evening the Toaiseach Micheál Martin addressed the nation in regards to Covid 19 and new Level Five (5) restrictions. As part of the new measures put in place schools will remain closed until the 11th of January. This is to give the new restrictions a chance to come into play and hopefully see the case numbers drop. As this is an extended holiday we will not be going online to teach the students.
As you know we have done and will continue to, put measures in place to keep all of your children and the staff safe.
I will keep you updated of any further measures/changes as they are made known to me.
Keep well, keep safe and a happy and healthy New Year to all our students, families and friends. Looking forward with HOPE to 2021.
Yours sincerely

Fingal Community College
Good morning all,
To keep you updated – Fingal will have received acceptance letters by Friday from their first round of offers – from Monday on all parents who have applied to Fingal will be in a position to call the school to see what their number now is on the list – this process will go on for a number of weeks as a lot of children have applied for more than one school – therefore the waiting lists (in all 2nd level schools) will come down.
All children will have a place in 2nd level school, although it may not be the school they have applied to.
2nd level schools are required to be transparent therefore parents are entitled to know their number on waiting list(s) after 1st and 2nd round offers have been made.

Letter from Ms Paula 23rd October, 2020
Dear Parents
We have come to end of a very different but successful half term. We are delighted that no one in the school community contracted the Corona Virus. The staff and myself thoroughly enjoyed being back in Thornleigh and are delighted that we will not have to close our doors during Level 5.
Over the past two months the children engaged in a lot of extra wellbeing activities and lots of outdoor learning. This outdoor learning is in keeping with our philosophy of Multiple Intelligences https://www.identifor.com/about/mi
and the fact that children learn differently. It was with great joy that I watched and partook in some outdoor lessons and watched the children grow and flourish in their surroundings. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful school setting to facilitate this. I also watched both staff and children enjoy the peace of the Labyrinth – thank you Eamonn for looking after it for us.
We have adapted Assembly and each Monday I facilitate Mindfulness over the intercom for the whole school at 9.30am. Followed on at 11am we host a Zoom Assembly, whereby a class records an Assembly performance and we stream it to all classrooms. I also present the Student of the Week award. Although we cannot send home Trophies at the moment the children still receive their certificate. As previous there is a weekly theme for student of the week and each child will receive one by the end of the year, in line with their particular, talent, strength or area of improvement.
The children also engaged in a lot of literacy and numeracy activities to enable them to ‘slow down to catch up’ on what they had missed out on. Although it was great to be able to engage in remote online learning, it is a poor second to the interaction with the pupils each day, in person, in Thornleigh.
A big thank you to you the parents for your cooperation with the new normal procedures we had to adopt to keep the Thornleigh Family and Community safe. It is very much noted and appreciated.
I would also like to extend a Thank You to ALL of my staff here at Thornleigh – without your dedication and care the school would not be as successful as it is – Míle Buíochas.
I would also like to thank the Board of Management and in particular the Chairperson Elaine, for her unwavering support.
All that is left to be said, is to enjoy the midterm break and get out for lots of walks and fresh air.
See you all on the 2nd of November 2020.

Homework 5th October, 2020
Dear Parents
At the beginning of the return to school in September we had made a decision in the interest of the wellbeing of the children and yourselves, and to allow for a settling in period, that the children would not receive any homework. It is now the end of September and a very successful one for all the children and staff. The school is Covid protected and all of the necessary safety measures have been put in place. Mostly the children have adhered to these but we would kindly ask you to give them a gentle reminder about keeping social distance.
With regard to homework – please see attached, this is the plan we as a staff have worked out. Your child/ren can bring a school bag(no wheelie bags permitted as we do not have the space in the classrooms and they are a health and safety risk) from Monday the 5th of October.
Enjoy your week/ weekend.

Letter from Ms Paula 28th September, 2020
Dear Parents Guardians
I hope that both you and your families are keeping well and safe.
We have now been back at school for 4 weeks and September is drawing to a close and with that the days are getting colder and shorter. In light of this please ensure that your children get out to play after school each day and are wrapped up cosy and warm.
Here in school we have been conducting outdoor lessons with great success . The children have been learning outdoors in the following subject areas
Literacy – enjoying being read to, oral language and creative writing.
SESE – Science, nature, the environment, History and Geography.
Physical Education – Sports, athletics and socially distanced games.
Music – singing
Drama with our external teacher Anne-Marie
SPHE – learning about themselves and the world in which they live, and how to be a better citizen.
We mentioned to you that there would be no homework for the month of September so we could ‘slow down to catch up’ and allow the children to settle back into school life. Over the next few days we will be reviewing this initiative and we will post here the new guidelines and strategy in the area of homework.
Have a lovely week

Good morning to you all,
I hope that all of you are keeping safe and well during these times. With the numbers on the rise in our city - Dublin - please look after yourselves and your children's health by keeping to the guidelines from the Government and the Department of Health.
Just to remind you that here at Thornleigh we have put extensive measures in place to keep your children safe in our school. They are handwashing many times a day and also hand sanitising in line with Department guidelines. We also have the school laid out to minimise contact with each other.
As a staff we have reduced the numbers of staff in the staff room at any one time to ensure social distance is adhered to.
The school is cleaned thoroughly each day and also deep cleaned regularly.
Enjoy the beautiful sunshine this weekend and we will see you all on Monday.
