Ms. Karen's 5th Class Term 2
The children in Ms. Karen's 5th Class have been very busy this term. They have covered topics such as multiplication, division, time and percentages in maths and they are continuing to read the novel 'Wonder'. They have also had regular opportunities to use the school chromebooks for project work and for some fun games. They have learned about the Irish Famine during history and they had an opportunity to learn about famous Irish emigrants during their trip to the Epic Museum. They have made (and eaten) pizzas and then they have wrote about that process. They have also participated in a litter pick on the grounds of the school. Here are some pictures of just some of their work and activities.

Quavers and Quadratics
We were fortunate to have musical and scientific experts with us in early May. The children enjoyed two workshops where they discovered and explored the undeniable connections between music and science. Some of the areas covered were sound waves, timbre, pitch and how instruments make noise. It was a fun experience to try the cello, violin, trumpet, guitar and trombone. Afterwards the children made their own instruments from recyclable material and participated as part of the class orchestra.

Seachtaine na Gaeilge
Musician in residence, the extremely talented Ms. Karen, brought in traditional musical instruments during Seachtaine na Gaeilge. She demonstrated the instruments and played some enjoyable tunes for the pupils. Generously, the children tried out the instruments and we had an afternoon of traditional Irish Music!
An Dreolín , Seachtaine na Gaeilge
We really enjoyed learning the dance to An Dreolín and we managed to teach junior infants our moves!
Procedural Writing
To consolidate our procedural writing the class wrote a recipe of how to cook a pizza. Inspired my their recipes and some classic Italian music, we created delicious pizzas. This was one of the pupil's favourite lessons so far!
Our environmentally aware students participated in a school yard cleanup! The results were great and made us more aware of where our disguarded rubbish can end up!

Christmas 2022
Christmas was a productive period here at Thornleigh. Not only were the elves busy in the North Pole, in addition the children were busy learning and creating. It was a great opportunity to complete thematic work and dynamic learning. Some of the fantastic work completed are pictured below. Notable projects were the timeline of toys in history, learn together and geography facilitated dynamic group projects. During art we created dazzling pastel snow globes and beautiful snowmen decorations.

Trip to The National Art Gallery and Trinity College Dublin
The Class enjoyed a fun filled day at the National Art gallery in November. We saw amazing art work and enjoyed some of the city's historical sites. First stop was Merrion park, followed by a fascinating tour of the National art gallery. We even managed to visit the impressive Trinity campus, where no doubt some of our amazing students will attend in the future!

Marathon Kids
During Term 1, 5th class worked very hard on fitness and athletic skills. The children ran laps on a daily basis, gradually increasing the distances that they ran. This training culminated in a final lap event in December where the children ran two laps around the perimeter of the school grounds. They received a Marathon Kids t-shirt and medal for their excellent efforts.
Someone Like Me Art
As part of the Learn Together curriculum, we discussed disabilities in class. We came up with ideas as to how society could help people with disabilities. We created beautiful artwork around this topic.

Trip to Art Gallery and Trinity College Dublin
In November, the National Art Gallery of Ireland hosted 5th class for a tour of a variety of art. We viewed artwork by Monet, Jack Yeats and many more. We had a chance to discuss art and to ask questions of an expert guide. Afterwards, we had lunch in Merrion Square playground. Finally, we took a walk around the grounds of Trinity College Dublin - all of the children intend to study hard so that they can attend there as students in the future!
Halloween Scarecrow.
We created a scarecrow at Halloween - he looked great in our school grounds!
We learned lots about Swords Castle on our visit there in October. We had an opportunity to explore the castle walls, Constable's Tower and Chapel. We also had some fun in the playground next to Swords Castle.
School Tour To Fort Lucan!
We had a wonderful day on our School Tour to Fort Lucan! The Children had so much fun on all the different rides, slides and games! The weather was fantastic and we really enjoyed our day in "Irelands Biggest Playground"!!

In June Muinteoir Sean's Class Were invited to UCD to take part in a Shared Learning Day and display our Science project that we worked so hard on all year! In collaboration with the PDST we were selected to be a part of the project which focuses on diversity in Science! The topic of our project was Nina Tandon, a very impressive American biologist and entrepreneur! She is working hard to grow bones in a lab, from scratch!
The children really enjoyed their day and we got to take part in a robotics workshop and listening to some amazing guest speakers!
The children, as always, represented Thornleigh wonderfully!
Christmas Choir Performace
For the Christmas assembly we performed some Christmas Carols in the hall for the school to watch via Zoom! The children sang wonderfully! We were accompanied by the wonderful Teresa and her harp! A big thank you to Teresa for all her work with us!

Women in STEM Project!
This year we have been selected to work with UCD and take part in their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) In STEM Project. This year the focus is on Women in STEM. We really enjoy learning about Science, so we're very excited to take part. As part of our work to date, we researched many different female figures from the world of Science ,Technology and Maths. It was great to learn about so many inspirational women, both at home and abroad. We voted for our favourite and eventually decided to focus our project on Nina Tandon, an American Biomedical Engineer! Check back in 2022 to see how we are getting on!!
STEAM Week!
During STEAM week we did loads of activities about Science, Technology and Maths as well as Art! We enjoyed making some scary Halloween Spiders after learned all about how strong their webs are! We also did lots of experiments and learned about Kandinsky and his "Art of Circles". One of our favourite experiments was creating a "Ghost"! using a bottle, balloon, baking soda and vinegar! The vinegar and soda mixed together to create a chemical reaction and this inflated the balloon! Here is how we made them! A big thanks to Miss Aoife for all her help!
Third Class
3rd Class
We are coming to the end of our first term and what an enjoyable time it has been in both of the third classes. Everyone in the class has been working very hard and they are striving in their work.
It has been a fun-packed term with lots of different activities including STEAM week (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths). The children got the opportunity to participate in different experiments such as homemade lava lamps, a glitter germ experiment, skittles experiment, coding activities and the art of circles.
Music has been a great part of the classroom through the use of singing, percussion instruments, and even participating in our very own Late Late Toy Show.
The children are making great progress particularly in Maths, English and Gaeilge and we are looking forward to continuing learning about new topics and ideas
Check out some of our cool displays that we have created around our classrooms. We have also attached some photo of different activities that we have got up to in the last few weeks.
