Green Schools Action Day - 02/02/2018
Thank you to all the boys and girls who made a big effort to wear blue
for our Action Day.
A super effort was made by the Green Schools Committee and the boys and girls in 3rd Class to clean up around the school. Check out the images below:

Thornleigh Green Schools
Action Day
Friday, 2nd February

Check out the Green Schools Committee planting flowers. They are using recycled drums from washing machines. You can keep an eye on how the flowers are progressing everyday as you walk in to school in the mornings, they are just outside the school gates.

Science Week 2017 - Theme: Water
This year the theme for Science Week was water. We had guest speakers from the Irish Seal Sanctuary and Trocaire to name but a few. Have a look at some of the amazing projects completed below: Senior Infants created a lovely display to explain the water cycle, 3rd Class did report writing on the water cycle and 5th class have an amazing project on hydroelectricity. Make sure you stop to take a look when passing them in the hallway.

We are working towards achieving our third Green Flag which has the theme of water. Keep an eye on our page for updates throughout the year.
Thornleigh’s Green Rap

Litter and Waste,
Let’s save the place!
Energy and Water,
Help the human Race!

We are a Green School,
We like to keep it clean!
When we work together
We make a great team!

We pick up the trash,
We clean it in a flash,
The Green Schools are great,
Everybody celebrate!

The boys and girls in 4th Class came together to create a new Green Code for our school to reflect all the different flags we have and are working towards. Well done guys!

Water Forum (November 2016)
Thornleigh Green School Committee were invited to send three members to represent the school at a Water Forum in Pearse Street Library. The workshop gave the lads the chance to design a perfect water system for our school, share their ideas with all the other boys and girls there and also get lots of new and useful ideas which they will be sharing with you over the coming months.

Remember if you come any leaks or drippy taps....report them to a member of the Green School Committee!!!
Litter Pick (October 2016)
4th Class were very busy recently, they did a great job picking up litter around the school and along the school perimeter. It's surprising the things you find. Ask the boys and girls about the 'treasures' they came across on their adventure!

Energy Flag - 2016
Thornleigh E.T.N.S. received a second Green Flag on  Wednesday 25/06/16 for Energy. A big thank you to all the boys and girls at Thornleigh and the wider school community for all their hard work. Also, a special mention to the Green Schools Committee who have done a lot of work creating posters, renewing our Litter & Waste Green Flag and keeping the whole school informed and updated on what we needed to do. We are looking forward to getting to work on our next Green Flag - Water.

Spring Clean 2016

Thank you to all the boys and girls from first class, the Green Schools Committee, the parents and Múinteoir David for helping us with our spring clean of the school grounds. We also had a special helper from Swords Tidy Towns giving us a hand.

Check out all the boys and girls who wore yellow and orange for our action day to remind us it was a low energy day!

Thornleigh Energy Action Day  Friday 5th February 2016

Energy Action day for our green flag will take place this Friday the 5th of February. As part of our Day of Action the GSC has come up with the following ideas:

1. Wear yellow or orange (i.e. bright colours to represent the electricity we are not using for the day).

2. Turn off lights all day Friday as much as possible.

3. Use whiteboards instead of interactive whiteboards.

4. If it's too hot turn off/down the radiators. Please don't have radiators on and windows open at the same time.

5. No computers for the day including golden time.

6. Staff are encouraged not to use the microwave or toaster this Friday.

7. No cooker/oven for the day.

8. Spring Clean - GSC will do a clean up outside with the help of the children of T.E.T.N.S.

9. Do not use the photocopier/printer.

Meet our Green School Committee for 2015/2016

Thornleigh E.T.N.S. earned their first Green Flag for Litter & Waste in 2012. Everybody worked hard to make sure our school was up to scratch and recycling our waste. This year the boys and girls at Thornleigh are working towards our Energy Flag.

For the past year the Green Schools Committee have been meeting and coming up with lots of excellent ideas on how we can save energy and continue recycling. There are now two Green School display boards. A Litter & Waste board, upstairs beside room 10 and an Energy board, downstairs outside room 2. Take a look when you're walking by!

Guzzler came to visit us for Science Week. He gave us lots of top tips how to save energy at home and in school.

1. Don’t leave the computer, white board or tv on standby, turn     it off at the power button.
2. Recycling saves energy, so save up your bottles, cans
and paper and put them in the recycling bin.
3. When it’s bright, turn off the light and don’t leave the light
on if there’s no one in the room.
4. If you’re cold, put on a jumper instead of turning up the heat.

5. If it’s safe to do so, walk, cycle or take the bus to school.

We updated our Green Code to reflect we are working towards our energy flag. It is inside the reception door beside Veronica's office.

Our Green Code
T
hornleigh is a green school,
Help the world
On Green day.
Recycling is good,
No litter on earth,
Love the environment.
Everyone saves energy
In our school!
Good energy,
Helps the world!

Check out our Green Team hard at work. Part of their duties on the Green School Committee is to help with recycling at Thornleigh. The Green Team also carry out bin inspections weekly to make sure all the bins are up to scratch. The best bins get an award to stick up in their classroom for a week!

Junior Infants have been making good use of recyclable materials in Aistear. Check out the boys and girls at their junk art station.
This year we had an alternative Christmas tree. Second Class came up with a very clever way to reuse the water bottles from our school lunches. We even had a competition to guess how many bottles were used!

In September 2015 an appliance audit was completed. Each class counted the number of appliances in their room e.g. whiteboard, projector, cd player etc. We found there was approximately 80 appliances in use.

However, out of the 80 appliances 55 were either left on or on standby, As you know, this means a lot of energy was being wasted, We all worked hard to remember to turn off electrical appliances and in January a follow up survey was completed,

This time it was found 29 appliances were on or on standby which was a huge improvement. Hopefully we will have an even better result when the Green School Committee do another check up later in the year.

Junk Art
The boys and girls in First Class have been very creative with their junk art.

Here are some samples of the work completed by the boys and girls of Thornleigh towards earning our second Green Flag.
