We have been very busy this past month in 6th class.

School–life is a little different this year but it hasn’t

stopped us working very hard. We have been learning

about the importance of personal hygiene and social

distancing. In maths, we are revising all the operations!

We have started our first novel, Alice Next Door, while

focusing on predicting. In Irish, we covered the topic Me

Féin. Check out some of the wonderful work that we have

Masks inspired by cultures around the world.

​We had a very busy October in 6th class. We learnt all about the history of Halloween and read some very spooky

stories such as ‘The Witches’ by Roald Dahl and ‘Hunting for Spiders’. We created our own clay pumpkin pinch pots in

art, which we were able to put tea lights in for Halloween. We studied the human heart and learnt all about how human

blood is able to circulate around the body. We did report writing, we even wrote our reports on different types of scary

spiders. We are powering through our novel, Alice Next Door. We have completed lots of character work and are delving

very deep into the plot of the story. 6th class can’t wait to find out how the novel unfolds. We spent lots of time in October

on long division in maths, which is a very hard topic but 6th class were committed to doing a great job. We collected our

own data in the classroom, to find out the class’s favourite film, Home Alone was the winner. We represented the data

gathered on bar charts. The fitness in 6th class is improving each week as we are engaging in the Marathon Kids

programme. This works by running daily laps after lunch and each week the laps increase by two. We have noticed huge

benefits from the daily exercise. We worked very hard in October, so we were all delighted to have the week off for

Halloween, to rest and return to school refreshed. ​

November has been a very busy month. We are fitter than ever before, we are now running 18 laps a day, the equivalent of 1.8km for our Marathon Kids Programme. We worked very hard on completing our novel. We completed story wheels, summaries and a book review on Alice Next Door. We even made life size character portraits of the four main characters, Alice, Megan, Shelia and Veronica. We studied Ag Siopadoireacht in Gaeilge, which got us excited about the shops reopening before the Christmas break. We studied the time of Advent, and the significance of the candles on the wreath. The candles on the Advent wreath symbolize hope, love, joy and peace. Some consider the fourth candle to mean purity, there is also a fifth candle, called the Christ candle that is lit on Christmas to remind Christians of the light Jesus brings to the world. We got our science hats on by experimenting with gases and even made raisins dance! In maths, we worked on lines and angles, while constructing our own triangles. Trick question: when does a triangle not add up to 180 degrees? NEVER! We also learnt how to multiply decimal points and convert currencies. 6th class have been presenting special interest projects each week, some of the topics covered so far include: World War 2, Cars, S.W.A.T., Japanese Fashion, Disney, Lithuania, Poland and Dogs. We worked very hard in November, so 6th class are excited about some of the lovely activities planned for December, such as STEAM Week and the virtual pantomime. 

Christmas 2020

Unfortunately, due to Covid 19, we couldn't put on a Winter Performance for you this year. However, we still wanted to spread some Christmas cheer to you so instead here's a short video of us singing one of our favourite festive songs...Wishing you all a safe and Happy Winter Break!!
